Sabine Lake is a 100-square mile lake that is really not a lake at all, but a bay system leading to the Gulf of Mexico. The lake is popular for fishing, boating, sail-boarding and other water sports. See our Fishing Page for guides.

Pleasure Island lines the north side of the lake and provides lots of waterside excitement -- a marina, several fishing piers ( including a lighted, concrete pier at Walter Umprhrey State Park on the southend of the island), several boat ramps, a rv park and hundreds of great spots for family picnicing.

Chambers County
Lake Anahuac -- a 5,000 acre lake, once known as Turtle Bay. In order to ensure a reliable source of fresh water, the Liberty/Chambers Navigation District purchased Turtle Bay from the State of Texas in 1953. The district maintains a levee system surrounding the south, west and north sides of the lake to prevent salt water intrusion into the system. The lake can receive water from both the Turtle Bayou watershed as well as by direct diversion from the Trinity River by pumping if necessary. When pumping is required, the water flows through a gate structure on the river into Big Hog Bayou and is then lifted into the lake by a pumping station located on the northwest corner of the lake.

In addition to protecting the lake, the south levee of Lake Anahuac has been established as a site on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail Map for the Upper Texas Coast. Public parking is available and foot traffic is allowed during daylight hours. The trail is bordered by woodlands, fresh and brackish marshes and the open waters of Lake Anahuac and Trinity Bay.

It is the largest man-made reservoir in the south. The lake was built on the Sabine River and numerous large creeks feed the reservoir.  . With much of the flooded area still containing standing timber in the early days,
excellent habitat was provided for the booming fish populations. Thus the reputation of being the top bass lake in the country was gained. The stocking of striped bass and the hybrids added much to the fishing opportunities; many claim the crappie fishing is the best to be found, and the appearance of white or sand bass has furthered the fame of this huge lake.  A part of the Texas shoreline is within the Sabine National Forest. Excellent facilities ranging from wilderness to resort quality are abundant.
