Check out a railroad depot. Visit a livery stable or any one of the community's log cabins. Or just stroll through the East Texas forest. See demonstrations of the old ways from people who have either studied the art or lived it. |
Piney Woods Country Winery The winery was bonded in 1985 and opened to he public in 1987. The winery has grown steadily and is known and respected throughout the state for its fine quality wines, and has entertained visitors from every state and 14 foreign countries. The location in the Texas Piney Woods country and the historical use of available fruits for what is known as "country wines" gave the winery its name. Pine Woods offers seven Muscadine wines and specializes in fruit wines including Blueberry, Strawberry, Plum, Pear, Peach and Orange wine. The owners welcome you for tasting, tours and sales year round. There is a small charge for guided winery tours and are by appointment only. Open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. and Sunday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. 409-883-5408. Off I-10 in Orange. City Museum -- commemorates the start
of oil in Southeast Texas with the big 1901 gusher. Several period buildings. Replica of the famous rig. Gift Shop.Since its dedication in 1976, over one-half million people have visited Gladys City. The museum provides many services to the public, including school tours, adult group tours, teachers' workshops, and historical information for researchers, journalists, and the general public. Gladys City serves as a historical clearinghouse by maintaining files of business papers, maps, pertinent news items, and photos relating to the history of the Spindletop oil field and Southeast Texas.
